Rats

13 October 2014

Thao has never had a pet. Pet ownership has been discouraged by the Vietnamese government as an unnecessary luxury in a country that has (until very recently) struggled to feed everyone. The result is a population with a shocking lack of empathy for animals. From eating dogs to rhino extinction, animals are seen as consumable resources.

I believe that treating animals well and understanding them is important. Despite misgivings from both Thao and Quynh, I acquired a couple of young rats. At first both parties were wary of the other. But eventually cuteness prevailed, and these furry balls of energy became part of the family. Thao named them Guinan and Crusher (no prizes for guessing which stack of DVDs we are currently working our way through).
