Lord of the Rings

28 January 2006

[A dozen telescopes] Friday was Saturn's closest approach. I met with a dozen local astronomers and we all pointed our telescopes at it. Mine is the short blue one at the far right. Despite the light-polluted location, Saturn was spectacular.

Like any hobby, amateur astronomy is a very slippery slope. There's always the temptation to get a bigger scope, then a better selection of eye pieces, then a sturdier tripod, then a tracking motor, then a GOTO computer, then a mirror defogger, then a CCD camera, then a solar filter, then a clamshell dome. I'm tempted, but I've got other more important interests. I shall remain the proud owner of the smallest (and least expensive) telescope at the monthly gatherings.
