Converting the
sin/cos bits from a pair of optical encoders into pulse/direction bits
sounds like, well, a two-bit problem. It turns out that this is
surprisingly complex. Here's the solution I designed and built seven
years ago. I've reanalysed it, and it still seems to be the best
possible solution using discrete logic. However I'm now exploring a
couple of other options which weren't available in '96...
