Linux on Desktop22 April 2002 Every six months I make a concerted effort to switch from Windows to Linux on my desktop. There is only one unusual requirement: I need two monitors. Last weekend was my fifth attempt, this time using the latest RedHat and Debian images. RedHat detected all the hardware, but appears to be impossible to upgrade due to exponentially growing RPM dependencies. Debian upgrades like a dream, but doesn't appear to be able to see any of my computer's cards. Between the two of them RedHat and Debian demonstrate all the required features, but individually they aren't unusable (for me). Frustrating to be so close. At least I learn something new each time. I'll try again in another six months. |
